Expedition to Spitsbergen with the participation of a lecturer from Vincent Pol University

Employees of the Museum of Polar Research in Puławy, including a lecturer at Vincent Pol University in the field of Tourism and Hospitality Management, professor Andrzej Pawłowski, are taking part in an expedition to Spitsbergen. Their destination is the Hornsund Polar Station.

The participants of the expedition set sail by ship on 20 August. They sailed for a week to reach Spitsbergen – Norway’s largest island in the Arctic Sea.

Participation in the study and training expedition will allow them to learn about the natural and cultural environment of Spitsbergen and visit the Hornsund Polar Station, run by the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The expedition also aims to establish contacts with the Museum of the Norwegian Polar Institute in Longyearbyen. Visits to other polar stations and an expedition to a glacier are also planned, although the realisation of these plans depends on the weather conditions on the island. The knowledge and experiences gained will be presented in permanent arrangements and exhibitions at the Museum of Polar Research in Puławy.

‘The motto of our museum is ‘We bring the Inaccessible closer’. We want to see with our own eyes what we talk about in our facility,’ tells us Professor Andrzej Pawłowski.

The museum in Puławy is the first museum of polar science in Poland. It is a relatively young institution, established in May 2020. Students from Vincent Pol University also benefit from the wide range of exhibitions by participating in classes and seminars held at this Puławy facility.

The staff of the Puławy museum, with the permission of the Polish Academy of Sciences, have organised an expedition to Spitsbergen on their own during their holidays.

The entire expedition will last two weeks and is scheduled to return to Poland on 4 September.
